Greetings everyone, I'm Rob Lalka, and I'm here at the Values Voter
Summit -- an annual conference for the religious right, which has long
dominated our nation's values debate. We've heard that this bloc is
starting to lose their control over the direction of the Republican
Party recently, and particularly with the leading Republican candidate
being Rudy Guiliani, that very well may be the case.

For decades, Republicans have made opposition to abortion the foundation of their national coalition. Strangely, though, they haven't actually passed anything particularly significant to reduce the number of abortions in the U.S. The Democrats, however -- long demonized for being "pro-abortion" -- have now passed an initiative in the House of Representatives to cut down on the abortion rate.

A Media Matters study has confirmed what
many of us have long believed: that the mainstream media consistently links
religion with conservatism and secularism with liberalism. The result is
death by framing: Christian equals right-wing equals Republican.

We would be wise to emulate
Jerry Falwell's passion and effectiveness; we would downright sacrilegious to
conflate our church with our party — a habit which, ultimately, renders Christ
our pawn instead of our king.

The debate about partial birth abortion is a
distraction from the real issue: how to reduce the number of abortions in America.
And the law that the Supreme Court upheld today will accomplish exactly nothing to that end.

Kowtowing to the likes of Bill Donohue is a
never-ending exercise in futility. He's
the Energizer bunny of bile, and nothing will
defang him except for standing up to him. But the twin goals of cultivating religious
respect and building a wide progressive coalition are important endeavors. And we ignore them
at our peril.

Right-wing religious leaders are attacking the purpose-driven Pastor Rick Warren for inviting Senator Barack Obama to speak at a seminar about AIDS. Why the attacks? Because they disagree with Obama's politics. Well, we're hitting back. Check out the letter that we've helped organize. About 30 religious leaders are standing up for the notion of -- imagine this -- people working...

One of the most significant revelations to emerge from the 2006
election is the Democrats’ enormous success with faith-based outreach. Democrats
who were willing to share their faith with voters consistently exceeded
expectations. Lost causes became close races. Close races became solid victories.
Solid victories became landslides.

At FaithfulDemocrats.com, we believe God longs for a
politics of compassion and social justice. We believe all of God's
creation must be restored and exalted. We believe war may be taken
only as a necessity and last resort. We believe families are best
served by a society that promotes the common good, not selfishness and
materialism.

The meetings were an eye-opening
experience. I was struck both by how much common ground existed
with "conservative" pastors and also with how similar the suggestions
from "conservative" and "liberal" were when it came to the Democratic
Party. These leaders didn't want Democrats to suddenly
"find God" as much as they wanted to be...

In the whirlwind of pre-election coverage of this
titillating accusation, we must not forget Christ’s command to judge not, lest
we be judged. If the allegation turns
out to be true, it will just be one illustration of a fundamental Christian belief:
that all human beings fall short and need God’s grace. No one is exempt from temptation. No...

Barack Obama answers FaithfulDemocrats.com's questions about humility, the black church, and partisan
prophecy. "The black church rarely had the luxury of separating individual salvation
from collective salvation," he says, "which is why its membership is at the forefront
of the fight for civil rights and the common good."

Because I accept the Holy Bible as the inspired and interminable Word
of God, I consider myself to be a Christian fundamentalist. I accept,
as an inseparable component of my faith, the omnipotence, omnipresence,
and omniscience of God.
Therefore, I am baffled by my fellow fundamentalists who seem to be
utterly opposed to and terror-stricken by the advancement of science,
including stem-cell research. ...

Can a congressional candidate whose faith says Catholics follow Satan win
in a district that's 30 percent Catholic?
That's the question in Minnesota's 6th congressional
district, where Republican Michele Bachmann belongs to a religious denomination
that says "the
papacy is the very Antichrist."
