Since the GOP is making the point that no one knows anything that Senator Obama has accomplished in his 47 years on this planet, I thought it might be a good time to enlighten people as to what exactly are some of the things that he has accomplished.
He earned a law degree from Harvard in 1991 and was the first African-American president of the Harvard Law Review.  After graduation he practiced and taught Constitutional Law.

He served 8 years in the Illinois State Senate before being elected to the Senate in 2004 with 70% of the vote, becoming the third African American since Reconstruction to be elected to the U.S. Senate.

His first law was passed with Republican Tom Coburn, a measure to rebuild trust in government by allowing every American to go online and see how and where every dime of their tax dollars is spent.

Since becoming a Senator in 2004, Obama had sponsored or co-sponsored 570 bills in the 109th and 110th Congress, of which 15 have become law.

1/14. Yes, and

To which I'd add that in the Illinois State Senate, he accomplished an awful lot.  He passed a fairly strong ethics bill in a state that's known for being the Wild West of political ethics rules.  He passed a bill expanding health insurance for kids.  And he passed a bill mandating that interrogations in potential death penalty cases be videotaped, to ensure that people don't get sentenced to death because they've had a false confession beaten out of them.

On that last one, in particular, Obama had to navigate some tough political waters, since the police department had initially been opposed.  But Obama convinced them to stay neutral, with the argument that the bill would actually protect police officers from false accusations of abuse.

Also, don't forget that he was a community organizer for a couple of years, working with lower-income people -- not at a distance on their behalf, but directly with them -- to secure job training centers and other things to improve their lives.  He was a civil rights lawyer as well.

So this notion that Obama's never done anything is simply not true.  True, most people can't name his accomplishments.  But most people can't name any of Hillary's, either, and no one slams her for it.

2/14. Thanks for sharing

Thanks for sharing that information.  Since the "steal and spend" Republicans aren't concerned about Hillary's experience, then I won't be either.

I just think it is important that we spread the correct information whereever and whenever we can.  That way when they ask what has Senator Obama accomplished, we can actually name quite a few accomplishments.

I hope you  won't mind me using this information on another one of my blogs?

3/14. Pastor Osteen
Written by stanjz  | Mar. 01, 08 21:11

I know Cindy mentioned that she was familiar with Pastor Osteen. I'm a bit of a fan of his, although he isn't perfect. I tend to get negative at times and Joel is more of an optimist. The reason I brought this up, is that Joel listed Barack Obama as one of two people he would like to meet. This was in a business magazine I read in my doctor's office. The name of the magazine escapes me.

It sure might help Barack in Texas if they were to meet, if only to counter balance the negativity directed toward Barack and his pastor in Chicago. Barack Obama inspires the pastor of the largest evangelical church in the U.S. It sure would make the GOP take notice.

4/14. Bill Clinton Shows Up At Lakewood Today
Written by stanjz  | Mar. 02, 08 17:11

Hmmm. Is anybody listening out there? Bill Clinton shows up at Lakewood. I just lost more respect for Joel today.  That incident with the gay soldier didn't help either.

" What would it profit a man to gain the world, but lose his soul" Mth 16:25,26 answer- it would profit him/her nothing.

There is a scripture from the Old Testament that states " Your accomplishments count for nothing on judgment day, only righteousness counts then." I'm forgetting where that was.

5/14. Hosted both candidates
Written by pollchecker  | Mar. 02, 08 19:26

yes I am familar with Lakewood as I attend their services from time to time and have personally met the family.   The church does not endorse any particular candidate.  And all candidates are welcome to attend services.

I doubt there are very many people in the USA that would turn President Clinton away.   Hell,  they would probably even welcome GW although not publicly supporting him.

Obama is going to win Texas.  The early voting lines have been EXTREMELY long.....longer than I have seen in over 30 years.

6/14. Spot On!

Great prediction!

What else do  you know for sure?

7/14. In the end
Written by pollchecker  | Mar. 09, 08 07:32

Once the caucus ballots are tallied, Obama will have come out of Texas with more delegates than Hillary.  The GOP came out in force for Hillary by day, but stayed home to watch American Idol that night.   The only question is whether the media will announce it?

Btw, please take your sarcasm elsewhere,  If you don't have something constructive to add,  then please go elsewhere.

8/14. Mr.

Another important accomplishment to look into; Google search "Lugar-Obama" and you'll see what most consider the most import piece of legislation to actually protect the American homeland. This piece of legislation is the most important national security measure since 9-11.It was created with an enormous amount of bi-partison support and McCain knows this, Clinton knows this, but the public does not.

9/14. Not Really Impressive...
Written by John Gibson  | Mar. 10, 08 09:34

Not to take anything away from Mr. Obama, but these hardly qualify as presidential level qualifications. 15 legislative successes out of 570 attempts is hardly noteworthy.

What Mr. Obama does possess which could carry him all the way to the White House is charming good looks coupled with a gift for inspiring rhetoric. Neither of these are presidential qualifications either, but, sadly, it can be the winning qualifications.

10/14. Better than GW
Written by pollchecker  | Mar. 10, 08 13:30

I think Obama's qualifications are a lot more impressive than ANYTHING GW EVER did!

11/14. Maybe so...
Written by John Gibson  | Mar. 10, 08 13:58
Maybe so, pollchecker, but that just reinforces my statements above. Americans are not looking at qualifications when deciding their votes. The 3 am phone call add might be cheesy, but it is true. Who do you want answering that phone? (BTW, this is not a plug for Hillary or anyone else, just raising a valid question in a world that needs it.)

12/14. John's Right!
Written by Mark  | Mar. 24, 08 08:45

I think John makes a good point.  Obama has demonstrated that he can inspire and look good.

However, as we move to the next phase of the election process it will be necessary for him to compete in the arena of ideas.

To date, this has been pretty shallow and nebulous in the Obama campaign.

13/14. Republican
Written by Mr. Republican  | Mar. 24, 08 15:23

570 co-sponsored bills you say?  Baloney. How many Senate bills did HE ORIGINATE that became law?  ONE.  Let's compare his totals to McCain.  Let's compare his military service record.  Let's compare his experience sitting on various high ranking committees and Chairing them.  Let's even compare the number of books they wrote!  What has Obama accomplished related to foreign affairs that would make him qualified to sit in the Oval Office?  What military experience makes him qualified? What Law making experience makes him qualified?

Please.

14/14. McCain is too old
Written by Young American  | Jun. 17, 08 12:01
I think it is really silly to try and compare experience here. McCain is grandfathered into the GOP and is almost twice the age of Obama. He is far past the point of MANDATORY RETIREMENT that is forced on most official in civil service. I don't think that since he would be forced to resign from a job at the post office, military service, or even the DMV, it would be wise to let a senile, out of touch, Pre-Baby Boomer even hold any office not just the most important one on the planet. I wouldn't hire him for any job. He is too old. He needs to grab his depends and go retire in Martha's Vineyard with the other rich white republicans who don't care about what REAL people are going through in this country.
