I must confess that I cringe in embarrassment every time our President steps in front of a microphone - embarrassment for America, embarrassment for the once-dignified and balanced Republican Party and embarrassment for a Bush-sponsoring Christian Church that has sold its soul to the god of sound bites.

Our swashbuckling President, only recently divinely "delivered" from the comatose condition of drug and alcohol addiction, has been the right guy for the times as we tread water in the cesspool of "world copdom."  The dead and dying stand as a grim Show-‘n-Tell of the narcissism of unchecked nationalism, patriotism and lust.

In a speech before the Knesset on the 60th anniversary of Israel's founding, President Bush gave as his mocking example of the futility of negotiating with the "enemy" the 1939 statement by Idaho's Sen. William Borah, "Lord, if only I could have talked to Hitler, all of this might have been avoided."

Setting aside the possibility that over time we create our own enemies in our inexplicable search for international boogeymen, our President's worldview equates diplomatic negotiation with appeasement, a policy of succumbing to hostile demands in exchange for peace.  The most referenced example of appeasement is British Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain's Munich Agreement in which Britain and France accepted that the Czech region of the Sudetenland should be ceded to Germany.

The target of Bush's ridicule of negotiation was made purposely obscure in the hope, I suspect, that Sen. Obama would take the bait.  Take the bait he did, and he jammed it down the throats of both Bush and McCain.  Advantage Obama!

Let's be honest; Obama got it right.  Bush's diatribe before the Knesset on appeasement was targeted for the presumptive Democratic presidential nominee - not the customarily-gentile and grandfatherly Jimmy Carter.

Appeasement or Preemptive War; America stands at the crossroad. Make no mistake about it; that is the looming focus for the 2008 Presidential campaign.  McCain vs. Obama - imperialism vs. civility; the past vs. the future; Old Testament Law vs. New Testament Grace; fear vs. hope.

That inevitable debate, only temporarily postponed in the unlikely event of a McCain/Clinton contest, is sorely needed in America as she struggles from the hidden agendas of a colonialist empire to the freewheeling information age.  Failure to act responsibly as a member of the international family of nations cuts instantly across cultural and class barriers worldwide, from the rice paddies of China to the cotton fields of America.

Aside from acting in poor taste by airing our domestic dirty laundry where it cannot be defended nor retrieved, our swaggering President demonstrated a profound ignorance of history - that of his own family.

Robert Perry, in the May 18, 2008 edition of consortiumnews.com, reveals a Bush family secret that would drive any of its descendents to drink:[1]

The archival evidence is now clear that Prescott Bush was a director and shareholder of companies that profited from and collaborated with key financial backers of Nazi Germany.

The business relationship continued after Hitler invaded Poland in 1939 and even after Germany declared war on the United States following Japan's bombing of Pearl Harbor in December 1941.  It stopped only when the U.S. government seized assets of Bush-connected companies in late 1942 under the "Trading with the Enemy Act..."

Protected by layers of well-connected friends, Prescott Bush (the President's grandfather) brushed aside the Nazi scandal and won a U.S. Senate seat (1952) from Connecticut, which enabled him to start laying the foundation for the family's political dynasty.

In recent years, however, the archival records from the pre-war era have been assembled, drawing from the Harriman (Averill Harriman) family papers at the Library of Congress, documents at the National Archives, and records from war-crimes trials after Germany's surrender.

At the expense of poor old Sen. Borah, who died in 1940, the Bush family super-appeasement strategy of aiding and abetting the Nazis well into 1942 remains one of America's best-kept secrets, according to Perry.

The righteousness of the free enterprise system masking occasional greed, our President may well enjoy the family fruits of appeasement.

The problem, of course, is that the American people will suffer the consequences for decades to come.

1/9. You Undermined Your Own Post
Written by Dan  | May. 20, 08 05:34

Stan,

Whatever points you attempted to make in this post were undermined by your cheap shots at our President in the opening paragraphs.  You opened with, "Our swashbuckling President, only recently divinely "delivered" from the comatose condition of drug and alcohol addiction, has been the right guy for the times as we tread water in the cesspool of "world copdom."

That disparaging remark was as much a slap to the face of God as it was an affront to our President.  Yes, Bush has spoken of his struggle with alcohol in earlier years.  What turned him from that was repentance and a commitment of his life to Jesus Christ.  And he has enjoyed a life free from drinking since that time.  In pointing that out, our President has glorified God.

Your  use of quotation marks around the word delivered communicates doubt of that fact.  What is it  that you doubt?  Is God not able to deliver?  Is there evidence that President Bush is not delivered from dependence on alcohol?  Were you trying to be funny?  Or was it simply a way to smear a statement by the President?

It is sad that on a webpage purportedly Christian in its perspective, you would accuse a brother in Christ -- for that is what President Bush is no matter what you think of his politics -- and that that you would mock God's ability to deliver.

That is sin.  And it cannot be justified in the name of politics.

I am sorry, but stopping alcohol and drug abuse, however "delivered," is not recovery...Our President has not only missed a major chunk of maturity, he exhibits all the classic narcissistic symptoms of a dry drunk, Christian or otherwise...

If you are suggesting that all one has to do is repeat the sinner's prayer and then be immune from any further criticism or, even, condemnation of behavior, that is not biblical but is, of course, classic American Evangelicalism...

I shall point you to Romans 12:2 - "Do not be conformed any longer to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind..."  The pattern of this world is to lie, to push one's weight around, to bear false witness and to play politics with other peoples'  lives in order to get your way...

While there are times when preemptive force is necessary; nevertheless, for our President to call diplomacy and negotiation "appeasement" and ridicule those who wish to honor the command of Jesus by meeting their enemy halfway, I would say that he has missed rudimentary elements of Christianity, to say nothing of his lack of honor and honesty with the American people...

I will, however, plead guilty to calling him a nitwit from time to time and that, my friend, is indeed a sin...As for our President's commitment of his life to Jesus Christ, the jury is sadly still out on that one...We have only his word - not his deeds - to go by...What a missed opportunity to lead America to serve and to follow!

As an enthusiastic  first-term supporter of President Bush, am I missing something here?  We have a self-confessed Christian President who has led this nation to the brink of economic and spiritual bankruptcy and yet insists on blaming others for his blunders...To make mistakes is one thing; to refuse to acknowledge your mistakes and, instead, to shift blame to others is inexcuseable for a Christian whose standing with God is solely based on self-examination and repentance...

"Mr. Bush, may I refer you to the 12 steps?"

3/9. The Clintons Are ill
Written by stanjz  | May. 23, 08 13:56

If David Wilhelm has anything on the Clintons related to the people near them who died, he needs to release that info. He needs to pick up his cross and do the right thing. Senator Clinton is in a state of psychosis. At this point, if a meteor falls out of the sky and hits Obama, it is from the Clintons!

4/9. Where IS the fruit of the Spirit?

Dr. Moody,

Dan is right-on in his assessment of your article. Your response, which is mostly continued attempts to disparage and marginalize the President, merely adds to the evidence of your hypocrisy and reveals the disingenuousness of the “confession” of your sin.

As far as this web-site being “Christian” it seems to be simply an example of Romans 1:22, Professing to be wise, they became fools.

5/9. Interesting!

I have heard of "Christian" countries, political parties, companies, churches, families...This is the first time I have heard of "Christian" web sites...The collective wisdom of group-think somehow masks individual accountability...At least ciberspace is a more fitting resurrection modality than corporate records, chads and church steeples flying through the air...

I recall a old take-off on a hymn that those in the "Christian" bookstore business used to trot out every once in awhile:  "My hope is built on nothing less than Scofield's notes and Scripture Press!"

Welcome to the wacky world of Dominion Theology!

7/9. Critical Thinking on Trial!
Written by Stan Moody  | May. 29, 08 05:37
Perhaps I had better explain in more detail...

There is no such thing as a corporate soul...Nations, corporations, political parties, bookstores, churches, even web sites are comprised of a wide range of people, each with varying agendas...In the spirit of "Narrow is the gate that leads to life, and few there be who find it," one can hope that a small remnant of people in each of these flawed institutions carries within the distinguishing marks of God's grace...

The spectacle of a "Christian nation" is very dangerous, as it suggests that appearing Christian is tantamount to being Christian...That is the spirit of Anti-Christ...Likewise, the notion that anyone who spouts the Christian idiom is in fact a Christian opens the door for false Christs...

The bottom line is that none of us can determine who is or who is not Christian merely by what they say...One has only to look at the current crop of Televangelists to know that there are false Christs out there sucking in those who are looking for easy answers to cross bearing...Likewise, a politician claiming the Lordship of Christ should be especially suspect, as he/she is prospecting for votes...God forbid that someone who claims to be pro-life and anti-gay should, under false premises, order the killing of thousands of pregnant mothers and impoverished straights in a preemptive strike against a foreign nation...God forbid, as well, that such a person, who claims Jesus as Lord, should stubbornly fail to repent when the evidence is incontrovertible that the strike had more to do with politics than obedience...

It is high time for the church to get out of politics and get on with the business of witness bearing, as opposed to assuming that every person who repeats the Sinner's Prayer is a Christian...Think about it!  Wouldn't it be easy for a liar to repeat the Sinner's Prayer if it gets him what he wants?

The true Christian is one who always questions/examines his standing with God and is slow to point to some epiphany as his moment of truth...

8/9. Now Place Yourself In His Shoes
Written by Mark  | May. 29, 08 13:14

I see that the criticism of your post has put you on the defensive Stan.  You were under the impression that you were making some sort of post that would be edifying while criticizing a brother in Christ.  You got called on it, and it hurt.

Now put yourself in the position of President Bush.  He has indeed made a commitment of  his life to Jesus Christ.  There are plenty of evidences that he takes that commitment very seriously.  And yet every day he is on the receiving end of countless barbs, cheap shots, accusations, etc.  You might not agree with his politics, but he is doing his best to lead this country, and he is doing it with every bit as much sincerity as you have when writing your posts.  My gues is that the criticism is painful for him as well.

Perhaps it would be more profitable if we would pray for those in leadership rather than hurl insults...

Wow, Mr. Moody the only thing that was pressed upon me after reading your blog was Mark 8:18...you are in need of prayer, may you seek God's face for truth. Mark 8:18 (Amplified Bible) 18Having eyes, do you not see [with them], and having ears, do you not hear and perceive and understand the sense of what is said? And do you not remember?
